At Nepal’s Pride Parade, a unique vision of queer resistance. Step inside the march:
On Saturday, after a two-year, COVID-induced hiatus, members of the Nepali queer community and their allies took to the streets of Kathmandu for the
—celebrating their hard-earned wins over the past decade, and looking to the future of LGBTQ+ rights within the landlocked Himalayan country., who had first heard about the march when it was launched in 2019. “I was aware it happened because I had been following the people organizing it quite closely,” says Chhetri of that first parade. “But this year was my first time seeing it in person.
That welcoming breadth extends to the way in which the parade is conducted, too, with organizational banners, speeches, special guests, and corporate or governmental donors all prohibited from participating in the march, in order to ensure it remains as democratic as possible.
The contentious political discourse around LGBTQ+ rights in Nepal may have been the first order of the day, but Chhetri hoped to capture something more human at the event too. “Everything that I was attracted to, people coming together, hugging, smiling, dancing, definitely had a profound impact on me,” he says. “I think I realized that what I was looking for, most of all, was love.”
