Mexican officials said the victims appeared to be mostly Central American migrants.
A cargo truck carrying more than 100 migrants crashed in southern Mexico on Thursday, killing at least 53 people and leaving several others injured, in a tragedy that takes place at a time when Mexican authorities have tried to crack down on migrant caravans walking towards the U.S. border.... [+]the Associated Press, the truck rolled over and crashed into a pedestrian bridge over a highway in the southern state of Chiapas.
Luis Manuel Moreno, the head of the Chiapas civil defense office said the speed of the truck and the weight of its human cargo may have caused it to flip over after it hit the pedestrian bridge. The crash caused many victims to be thrown out of the truck’s trailer while several others, both survivors and the dead, were jumbled into a pile inside the trailer.
According to local officials, 21 of the injured people had serious wounds and were taken to the hospital and the Mexican Attorney General’s office said three of the injured were in critical condition. The victims of the accident are believed to be migrants from Central America and local authorities noted that the majority of them appeared to be citizens of Guatemala, which borders the state of Chiapas.
