Jerry Lara/San Antonio Express-NewsStudents in Edison High School’s health professions and first responders magnet programs participated in a mock disaster drill on Thursday, in concert with local law enforcement and emergency personnel, to prepare for careers in those fields. The objective was learning how to save lives during a mass casualty.

The drill involved a school bus and students, with Edison’s EMT and other health science students treating and triaging injured people and taking them to appropriate vehicles for emergency transport. Also, Edison law enforcement students conducted an investigation and made an arrest. Emergency personnel from Acadian Ambulance, the Bexar County Sheriff’s and the San Antonio Fire Department evaluated students’ performance and provided feedback.

“We want to start introducing , with these programs and with these organizations, and start getting them ready for the workforce,” Edison Assistant Principal Laura Zapata said, adding that of the students in the programs, such as health professions and first responders, are able to obtain certifications after graduating.
