In the second quarter, Delta Air Lines did not have a single involuntary denied boarding, meaning no passenger was forced off a flight due to overbooking.
A Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-900 model, approaches Logan Airport in Boston in 2018.. Two years ago, in what is the best-known example of an airline passenger being forced to give up a seat he had paid for, Chicago airport security police dragged a belligerent United Express passenger off a flight.
On Delta’s July earnings call, CEO Ed Bastian noted that Delta flew a record 53.9 million passengers and had an industry leading 88% load factor and that, “Even with these record volumes, this was the first time in our history that Delta had zero involuntary denied boardings for an entire quarter.” So Delta reduced overbooking on such flights by a few percentage points. The carrier understood that leisure passengers, often less committed to their schedules, can more easily be induced to give up booked seats.
For Delta, however, the average incentive payment remains between $300 and $400 and payment seldom rises about $600, Phillips said.
