When I interview Carol Burnett by telephone, she places the call herself. I pick up and there she is. Comedy icon, television trailblazer, winner of Peabodies and Emmys and Golden Globes since before I was born, her most recent accolade a lifetime achievement award named in her honour. She calls me “dear.”, playing a feisty retirement home resident opposite a musically talented high school student named Amber . In the film, Amber needs help from friends and family to fulfill her dreams.
“I saw it in the window and I just couldn’t resist it!” Carol Burnett in a sketch from her variety show., widely regarded as one of the best programs in TV history, was also the result of what Burnett calls “an unusual contract with CBS. It would never be done today, and I don’t think it had ever been done before. If I wanted to ‘push the button,’ CBS would have to give me a one-hour comedy variety show for 30 shows whether they wanted to or not. And I pushed the button.
In her latest gambit, Carol Burnett appears opposite Auli’i Cravalho in the Netflix movie All Together Now.The pandemic has briefly stopped her touring life, however. “I’ve been going on the road every so often to various theatres around the country and doing 90 minutes of Q&A,” she says. “I had about 10 or 12 that I was going to do this year but we had to postpone them until whenever. I miss that because for me it keeps the old grey matter ticking.
