Astros first baseman José Abreu says he doesn't feel good at the plate right now, but...
Jose Abreu of the Houston Astros is tagged out at third base by Matt Chapman of the Toronto Blue Jays after being picked off at second in the seventh inning at the Rogers Centre on June 8, 2023 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.TORONTO — José Abreu recorded his first multi-hit game in more than two weeks to raise his batting average to .259 for the month of June, but the man who's hitting .
With Jake Meyers at the plate, Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk noticed McCormick wandering a bit off first base and looked like he might throw down to try to catch him sleeping. Seeing the pump fake by the catcher, Abreu took a few extra hops toward third base, which triggered Kirk's throw to second. Caught in no man's land, Abreu futilely took off for third only to be easily thrown out.
The mistake effectively killed the inning with Meyers grounding out and Martín Maldonado striking out. The Astros didn't have another runner reach base the rest of the game. It's hard to blame an entire loss on Abreu for that one gaffe when there were plenty of other miscues, including Jeremy Peña not hustling down the line on a ground ball back to the pitcher which he could have beaten out had he been running hard because the throw to first ended up being wild.
