Astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore have returned to Earth after a longer-than-expected stay on the International Space Station (ISS) due to a propulsion system malfunction. The crew successfully docked with a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft and were welcomed back by their replacements.
Astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore are finally returning home after being stranded in space since June 2024. The duo faced a stressful situation when their spacecraft began experiencing helium leaks, pushing fuel into the propulsion system and resulting in a breakdown of their thrusters. This unforeseen issue forced them to stay longer than initially planned on the International Space Station (ISS).
During their extended stay, Williams and Wilmore diligently managed their limited supplies by carefully rationing food and recycling water, even making soup from reclaimed resources. They had been scheduled to return to Earth in February 2025 aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, but the malfunctioning thrusters delayed their departure.Fortunately, NASA launched Crew Dragon 10 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida to bring them back. The spacecraft arrived at the ISS on March 16, 2025, and the astronauts successfully docked with the station. The return mission was a joyous occasion, with the crew warmly welcoming their replacements and bidding farewell to their temporary home. As part of the tradition, astronaut Nick Hague donned a gray alien mask and black hoodie during the livestream, adding a touch of humor to the event. Spacecraft and spacesuits are equipped with protective shielding against harmful radiation such as UV rays, X-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays. Additionally, onboard sensors constantly monitor radiation levels to ensure astronaut safety. NASA takes radiation exposure seriously and implements various measures to minimize risks for astronauts during space missions
