The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 is approaching 600,000, with the virus still taking advantage of inequalities across the country.
COVID-19 claims the lives of Black and Latino Americans earlier than it does for whites. Nonwhite victims are typically a decade younger than whites, the CDC says.
Public health experts see these disparities as a loud message that the nation needs to address deep-rooted inequities. Ramos had asthma and diabetes and had quit his job as a chef at Red Lobster before the pandemic because of diabetes-related trouble with his feet.
