With end of season nearing, Rockets coach Stephen Silas knows he has no guarantees

Yet as the season’s final morning walk-through on the Toyota Center court ended prior to the Rockets’ home finale Tuesday night against the Denver Nuggets, it remained uncertain how long Silas would be in the position he has held for three seasons. With the Rockets 19-60 going into Tuesday's game, there has been increasing speculation about his tenuous status.
Silas, completing the final guaranteed season of his four-year contract, was hired to coach a team with former MVPs Harden and Russell Westbrook. He ended up coaching teenagers who even now give him a starting lineup younger than the teams that played across town Monday for the NCAA championship. They prioritized the long game, even with the pain of losing that came with the worst three-year record in franchise history.
Silas said he has not spoken with Stone or team owner Tilman Fertitta about his future. It would be impossible for him to have not considered the situation, just as leadership would inevitably think about the decisions ahead. Silas’ contract situation coupled with the plan to begin building a team to win will demand a decision about the coach to guide a very different Rockets roster, even with the core of the rebuild expected back.
