Preliminary estimates suggest as many as 700 homes sustained some kind of damage, Peguis officials say.

A partial evacuation was ordered during the 2017 flood, but Sutherland says he's never seen anything close to the damage left in the wake of this spring's flood.William Sutherland says the true extent of damage to homes will continue to be revealed in the coming days and weeks as more evacuees return and allow officials inside their houses to assess the impact.

Part of the work now is trying to gain access to homes locked up during the mass exodus and assessing which are safe to return to, and then bringing those people back, Sutherland said. Depending on the extent of the damage, some property owners may be compensated for home repair costs. Other homes may be deemed a total loss, though how many were ruined is still an emerging picture.

"That is one reason why we did not want to leave our home. We didn't want to have to wait a few years to get another house."
