What legacy will Boris Johnson leave for UK women?
Which leads us to the big question: how and what did he do for women, both in and out of government, once he secured the role he had long lusted after? It does not make for impressive reading. Though he has declared himself a feminist, Johnson's policies have disproportionately had negative impacts on women, and nothing about the way he has conducted himself in government suggests his ostensible feminism is authentic.
Nothing that was proposed during Johnson's tenure to help women has been delivered. His government promised no fewer than 20 times, over three years, to enact an employment bill which would prevent pregnancy and maternity– which is rife in UK workplaces. The bill would have allowed mothers to take extended paid leave when newborns required neonatal care; a week of paid leave for caring duties; and strengthened measures against sexual harassment in the workplace . The bill was abandoned.
