A group of liked\u002Dminded Tory MPs and senators plan to form their own caucus group focused on civil liberties issues — and vaccine mandates
On Friday, O’Toole’s office declined to provide a statement on Gladu’s caucus group, referring reporters to Gladu herself. She insists this is not a challenge of O’Toole’s public messaging on vaccine mandates, but instead a routine effort to develop and advocate new ideas internally.
Prior to last week’s caucus meeting, Alberta MP Ron Liepert fumed that the party was still consumed by debates over vaccination instead of prosecuting the Liberals on other issues, such as Alberta’s energy sector. The MP said the vaccine mandate issue is just one of many where caucus feels unheard, and it’s another sign of growing disenchantment with the leader.
In the meantime, Parliament is set to return on Nov. 22, and it may finally provide a clear idea of which Conservative MPs remain unvaccinated. Party sources say the number is very small, likely less than five out of 119 MPs. But the Conservatives are now in the position of both promising to abide by a vaccination mandate, and opposing any form of virtual Parliament; that leaves essentially no way for an unvaccinated MP to actively participate in the House of Commons.
