Five years ago, the Mavericks became a tanking success story. Now, they're an example to the Spurs of how things can go wrong even after a lucky break.
Landing Luka Doncic after tanking five years ago gave the Mavericks' future a big shot in the arm in drafting one of the Top 10 players in the NBA. But just five years later, the Mavericks stand as a warning to the Spurs of what can go wrong in rebuilding.DALLAS – Five years ago, the Mavericks had a plan, and it worked exactly like it was supposed to. They lost a bunch of games on purpose, then they got lucky, and they wound up with a superstar.
Theoretically, perhaps, but it hasn’t happened in real life yet. Part of that can be chalked up to poor decisions by Mark Cuban and his front office, which let Jalen Brunson walk away for nothing and then inexplicably traded for the point-guard amalgam of Sam Bankman-Fried and Elon Musk. Entrusting your future to Kyrie Irving sure seems tempting, to a certain kind of optimist, until the whole thing blows up.
They dumped Porzingis for Spencer Dinwiddie, who helped them get to one conference finals but who they flipped a year later into a deal for Irving. And if they can’t figure out a way to lose to a historically bad Spurs team without most of its best players, the Mavericks are in danger of losing their lottery pick, too.
