For many economists, the current unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent is considered low. Unfortunately, this level translates to more than a million Canadians actively seeking work who are not earning a living, nor contributing to greater production. If we add those who have given up looking and those desiring more hours, the total rises to well over two million people.
Self-esteem is reduced, and there are increases in mental illness, drug abuse, family breakdowns, criminal activity, apathy, violence and suicides. High unemployment is normalized by elites because inflation and wage growth can be contained with little cost to themselves. Mainstream economists in cahoots advise tight fiscal and monetary policy that pretend to benefit all, but which in fact burdens the poor, sharply increases inequality and destabilizes society.
