"Everything that has happened so far has been done in the dark," said Dr. Audrey Nath, an HISD parent who did not apply for the position."They have been dodging questions or not showing up to our meetings."Applicants for the board of managers include 232 current or former HISD parents, 136 former students and 238 teachers, according to the state agency, which released the numbers on Friday afternoon.
After getting appointed, the board of managers should improve student outcomes by"representing the vision and values of the community," according to a job description posted online by the state agency. Roles include monitoring and supporting the superintendent, engaging with community members and creating governance systems that will ensure a smooth transition back to local control, according to the state agency.
Current board members did not respond to inquiries about whether they had submitted applications this time.Meanwhile, some community members said the lack of transparency and un-democratic nature of the process so far has made them wary about participating. Many of those who have been most outspoken against the takeover told the Chronicle they did not apply.
"It’s no coincidence that Abbott is selling vouchers with one hand and taking over HISD with the other," she said."And the goal is to stop schools from educating children who might grow up to vote against the existing power structure." McGee compared the governance structure to a"dictatorship," noting that Morath, who will appoint the board, has no connection to Houston communities and schools.Nath, whose son attends Wharton Dual Language Academy, said she did not put her name in the applicant pool because she, too, lacks faith in the process.
