The synthetic opioid fentanyl remains a danger in Chicago, especially in Black and Latino communities, where the odds of a fentanyl-involved overdose have significantly increased in recent years.

Cook County data shows 262 Latinos died from an opiate overdose in 2020 — that’s nearly twice the number of deaths recorded in 2019.about how more collaboration and cooperation between the U.S. and Mexican governments needs to happen to effectively curb fentanyl production, trafficking and use.“This is a constant conversation, and it has to be addressed from many fronts, not only the law enforcement. … It’s a multi-faceted issue,” Torres Mendivil said.

For Latinos, addressing and overcoming stigmas surrounding substance use can be a challenge, said Esperanza Health Services care coordinator Nicolas Zavala. “Stigma is a big barrier to individuals seeking care and treatment and also to families and communities in approaching this issue and understanding what their loved ones are going through,” Richardson said. “The way we talk about people who use drugs in their communities directly impacts the kind of care that they receive and their willingness to go seek care.
