Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could debut with the BlueJays soon, but there will still be work to do once he does (bnicholsonsmith)
TORONTO – Wednesday afternoon in Syracuse was significant for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in a couple of ways.
Now that Guerrero Jr. has crossed that threshold, many observers assume that he’ll arrive in the majors soon–even within a matter of days. And it’s entirely possible that Guerrero Jr. will be in the Blue Jays lineup playing third against the Oakland Athletics on Friday, but the decision’s more nuanced than reading a stat line or crossing off days on a calendar.
On the field, Guerrero Jr.’s defence remains a critical variable for the Blue Jays. Long-term, the team gains massive value if Guerrero Jr. can stay at third base. If that happens, the Jays get to keep first base available for another offence-first player and designated hitter stays open for a rotating cast.
Because Guerrero Jr. has been injured twice in the last calendar year, his conditioning remains another question. Knee and oblique issues sidelined him for weeks at a time, slowing his development. Ideally, he arrives in the majors fully ready to play five or six days a week. At this point, he has yet to play four times in a row.
