It’s becoming more apparent the BlueJays have reason to see themselves as contenders. After their 5-4 win over the Orioles, they extend their lead over Baltimore for the final AL spot to 2.5 games. (Via bnicholsonsmith)

A bloop single off the bat of Hanser Alberto landed beyond the reach of Cavan Biggio to give Baltimore a 4-3 lead Friday heading into the bottom of the 10th inning, but with Toronto down to its last out on Jackie Robinson Day, Randal Grichuk hit a two-run, walk-off home run to grab a 5-4 victory.

Thanks to another strong start from Hyun-jin Ryu, the Blue Jays didn’t need much offence. The left-hander limited the Orioles to two runs over six innings while striking out seven and throwing a season-high 98 pitches. Along those lines, the recent addition of Taijuan Walker made an immediate difference. Because they acquired Walker, who will start Saturday now that he has completed the COVID-19 intake process, the Blue Jays could return Thomas Hatch and Anthony Kay to the bullpen instead of using them as piggyback starters. Once Ryu left the game, Hatch entered and pitched an effective seventh inning.

Still, this isn’t the first time the Blue Jays have dealt with injuries this year and they’re still winning more than their share of games.
