The public-private entity manages Brooks, the 1,308-acre former Air Force base less than a mile and a half away from the arboretum site. The authority would lease or convey the land to Arboretum San Antonio, a nonprofit founded by Cisneros that’s developing a master plan for the site.An adjacent 18 acres previously slated for housing now is set to be purchased by the county for a public park, potentially for disabled children.
It’s unclear what the arboretum will cost in total. Depending on the development of the master plan and considering the cost of other arboretums, the price tag could be from $30 million to $40 million, Corser said. “We have some facilities that are nice to have in the community, but a lot of times they’re not able to be self-sustaining,” Moody said. “I do have that concern and it remains.”
