Arts Commons names new VP with extensive arts experience yyc

Sarah Garton Stanley will bring diverse expertise and passion as a producer, programmer, and artistic director to the leadership team when she arrives from Nova Scotia on Sept. 20. She will lead the department responsible for all areas of programming: Social Impact, Education, Visual and Media Arts, and Arts Commons Presents.“Arts Commons is a beacon for responding to the city and territory it calls home,” says Stanley.

Stanley is the current artistic producer for The National Arts Centre’s National Creation Fund, where she leads a team in the oversight of a $2-million annual budget supporting the creation of new works across Canada in theatre, dance, music, and interdisciplinary arts. With her partner, she is also the co-steward of Historic Birchdale, located in Nova Scotia.Article contentInstructions for Performance, Philosophy, Politics.

Her career includes leading The Cycle, a 7-year project focused on the intersections of contemporary performing arts practices with Indigenous creation, deaf, disability and mad arts, and climate. She served as the first female artistic director at Buddies in Bad Times, the inaugural artistic associate for the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, the founding artistic director of spiderwebshow.ca , and co-founder of the Festival of Live Digital Art.

A graduate of Vancouver Film School, she is currently finishing her Ph.D. in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University, where her research revolves around the CBC Massey Lectures and the genealogical, political, and administrative structures that house professional arts organizations in Canada. “I am beyond excited that Calgary and Arts Commons have been able to attract someone with her expertise, thoughtfulness, and boldness to help imagine a new future for the arts in our city as we prepare to break ground on the Arts Commons Transformation next year,” says Alex Sarian, president and CEO of Arts Commons. “SGS’ work lives at the intersection of local impact and national dialogue, and at the intersection of so many different art forms and genres.
