The Art Street Collective hosts its second annual fine art exhibit and gala on Oct 3-4 at Bow Cliff Senior Centre in Calgary, featuring eight local artists and diverse works.

The Art Street Collective, a group of eight local artists founded by Fran Schlosser, is hosting its second annual fine art exhibit and gala on Oct. 3 and 4 at the Bow Cliff Senior Centre in Calgary. The weekend event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days at 3375 Spruce Dr. S.W. and features a diverse range of art forms, from paintings to papier-mâché sculptures, along with a book collaboration.

Second Annual Show at Bow Cliff

The Art Street Collective was founded by Fran Schlosser, who envisioned a group of artists working together toward a common goal. Schlosser said she had a grand idea to bring artists together for a fantastic event and to have something to work toward. She noted that the group is diverse, offering all sorts of different art forms, which she finds beautiful.

Each artist will display their works in aisles that have been transformed into streets at the venue. This setup allows visitors to view all the work along one row and engage with the artists to learn the stories behind the pieces. The event also includes a gala, with food prepared by artist and chef Susan Osness.

Diverse Art Forms and Artist Stories

Schlosser is bringing a book she created with her 10-year-old granddaughter, Olivia. The book, titled Realm of Forgotten Wonders, is a collaboration where they exchange letters, and Olivia's answers influence the direction of the story. Schlosser described the book as being about remembering and discovering, rather than epic wars or battles.

Artist Susan Osness spent the last year creating pieces for the show. She turned to papier-mâché made with recycled papers and discards to avoid landfill waste. Osness reused everything and made 27 pieces in her collection. She said that when she starts making them, she has an idea in mind, but the piece often speaks to her and ends up being something completely different.

Connecting with the Community Through Art

Osness and other participating artists say it is extremely emotional to show their art to the public because they never know how visitors will react. Artist Jane Romanishko said that as artists, they are solitary people who go to their studios and paint, and this event is their chance to connect with the community, showcase their portfolio, and see old friends. She added that old collectors come, and they meet many new collectors, and it is not just about the sale but about making connections and building new relationships.

Romanishko's art is inspired by travelling to the far reaches of the world with her photographer husband and seeing the people living there. Her major style is pastel, which she calls representative impressionistic. It is realistic but on the loose side of realism. She has paintings of locals from Burma, Nepal, Mexico, Africa, and India, with a lot from India.

The Art Street Collective Fine Art Show and Gala kicks off Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Bow Cliff Senior Centre, at 3375 Spruce Dr. S.W. The event offers a unique opportunity for the public to meet the artists, learn about their creative processes, and purchase original works.
