The program redirects some of the money Ontarians pay on gasoline into public transit.
Municipal transit systems receive two cents per litre of tax revenue. The funds are aimed at helping with staffing, infrastructure, vehicle purchases and accessibility. In total, Queen’s Park says $379.5-million will flow to municipalities, including an $80-million bump due to lower gas sales. “We are very thankful for the funding that will help local transit systems continue to operate and provide high levels of service to the more than one-million Ontarians who rely on transit every day,” reads a statement from Kelly Paleczny, chair of the Ontario Public Transit Association.Ctrl+Enter
