Newspaper magnate Cecil King described as 'nonsense' claims that he discussed a putsch to oust Harold Wilson with Lord Mountbatten - and claimed it was in fact the Labour prime minister who staged a boardroom coup against him

Mr King told Sir Robert that by early 1968 the Mirror, which had strongly supported the post-war Labour government, had publicly “cooled” towards the Wilson government and he had reached the personal conclusion that the pipe-chomping prime minister was not up to the job. Shortly after the paper had made clear its stance, Mr King was summarily removed as chairman of IPC in a boardroom coup in May 1968 for which he said he had been offered no explanation either “then or since”.
