Designated or not, Archie Bradley has become the Diamondbacks' top late-inning option as they enter the stretch run with a wild-card berth at stake.
When the Diamondbacks designated veteran closer Greg Holland for assignment on Wednesday, it opened the door for Archie Bradley.
The move is a natural response to present form. After fine-tuning his mechanics when his ERA rose to a season-high 5.66 in late June, Bradley has not been scored upon since while posting his first two saves, two holds and a victory in 12 appearances. Bradley credits chief statistical analyst Mike Fitzgerald, pitching coach Mike Butcher and his catchers for helping him regain his form. One of the keys was the return to a lower arm slot, a change driven by a graph drawn up by Fitzgerald and his group that showed Bradley’s effectiveness waned as his release point climbed.
Bradley was one of premier setup man in the National League in 2017, going 3-3 with a 1.73 ERA, one save and 26 holds as the Diamondbacks beat Colorado in the NL wild card game before being swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS. His signature moment that season came Aug. 8, when he pitched a 1-2-3 eight inning in a victory against the Dodgers at Chase Field and shouted, “This is our house. Let’s go.” as he walked into the dugout.
“Hitters are going to get theirs. There are a lot of people making a lot of money in this game, and that is because they can hit the ball. At the same time, a good pitcher will stop good hitting. He went through the good part of their lineup, too, and he got a huge save for us.”
