'Protect and serve? Protect the money, maybe. And serve the warrants,' columnist John Archibald writes about the arrest of Martha Menefield, 82, by Valley, Ala., police after she failed to pay a $77 bill to her city’s trash service. Read it:
Of course the world went nuts. It’s rubbish. Garbage. Trash. And the balance on that police overreach ought to come due. The very fact that Police Chief Mike Reynolds thought it wise toshows exactly where his head is at – and there’s not a lot of sunshine up there.
It’s enough to make Andy Griffith spin in his Mayberry coffin, enough to make anybody with a heart of flesh and a shred of a conscience question whether that whole “protect and serve” thing was just a marketing campaign all along.Look around. There’s gun violence and hate crimes and inflation and scammers and bad drivers and litterers and a world full of trouble that every day requires good, trusted, police professionals to ease our danger and our minds.
So my question to you is not whether you should be angry for Ms. Menefield, or whether you should be angry at Valley’s chief nitwit. That’s not even a question.Email:Because police aren’t just forced to be juice men for cities beholden to behemoth waste management companies. They’ve long been the muscle that enriched everything from towns to big corporations.
