The results from a poll of 507 Halifax Regional Municipality residents in January indicate that half of them go downtown for fun or leisure at least once or twice a month, 37 per cent visit a few times a year and only 11 per cent say they rarely find themselves downtown.Asked what might encourage more frequent visits, respondents want more parking, cultural events, increased safety and enhanced public transportation from off the peninsula.
About half of those polled said a downtown aquarium or a new performance venue would likely draw them, and nearly as many want to see more family-friendly things to do .The survey also found that perceptions of the downtown have somewhat evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic, with only a third agreeing that it has become more vibrant. Over half agree there is a lot to do, but a small proportion disagreed.
People living with disabilities are"significantly less likely" to perceive downtown as safe or feel at home when they visit, the survey found.It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
