I’ve been writing about technology for two decades and am routinely struck by how the sector swings from startling innovation to persistent repetitiveness. My areas of specialty are wearable tech, cameras, home entertainment and mobile technology.
In June last year, I got to test the Apple Vision Pro at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference before anyone else: I was literally at the front of the line. It blew me away—it was a moment or two before I could speak afterwards. Here’s my long-term review of Apple’s latest product category.I’m not usually an early adopter. But this was different—the first step into spatial computing, as Apple had it.
External cameras pass through footage to the screens inside so you never feel disconnected from the world around you. But the quick set-up process means that within minutes you can see app icons floating in the room around you. That’s just the beginning because you can put multiple windows and apps all over the place—and they stay where they’re put with pixel-perfect precision.
You can watch movies on huge screens, play games in immersive detail or look at multiple sports games at the same time. If you’ve taken a 3D spatial video on your iPhone 15 Pro, for instance, you can watch these back on the Vision Pro. They are amazing and remain as breathtaking now as when I saw the first demo last year—only now these are my memories in front of me. Mostly of my dog, as anyone who knows me would find unsurprising. You can also record this stuff using the Vision Pro itself. I’ve got a lot more dog footage this way.
