Apple is embarking on a data collection initiative in Malaysia to enhance its Apple Maps service. The company will deploy teams carrying portable backpacks equipped with LiDAR sensors and cameras to capture imagery of pedestrian-only areas, parks, plazas, and transit stations across Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Pinang, Johor, and Melaka.

The company says that it’s committed to protecting user privacy while collecting this data, by censoring faces and licensing plates on images that are published in Look Around.
The Apple Maps rebuild was announced by the Cupertino-based company back in 2018, to better compete with Google Maps, considering how.
