Apple is set to introduce a new first-party password management app named, well, Passwords for its iPhones, iPads and Mac operating systems, according to
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This app is designed to compete with existing password managers such as 1Password and LastPass, which generally require a subscription fee for their services.
The tech giant currently provides password generation and storage through iCloud Keychain, which synchronises passwords across all of its devices and Windows PCs via a browser extension. However, these passwords are inconveniently located within the Settings app, making them difficult to access or modify. If Gurman's report is to be believed, the new app will streamline password management for users in Apple's ecosystem.
It is claimed that the app will organise passwords into categories like accounts, WiFi networks, and Passkeys. It will also support password importation from other apps and automatically fill in passwords when logging into websites or apps. Additionally, the app is supposedly compatible with the Vision Pro headset and will include two-factor authentication.
Gurman says Apple plans to unveil Passwords at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11. Alongside it, the company is expected to announce updates to iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, WatchOS and VisionOS, which will also reportedly incorporate new AI capabilities.
