Videotron has struck a deal to acquire Shaw’s Freedom Mobile, Canada’s fourth-largest wireless carrier, for $2.85-billion.
The Competition Bureau has appealed the tribunal’s decision, which was issued late last year, arguing that it made legal errors in its rush to issue a judgment. Rogers and Shaw are aiming to close their deal by Jan. 31, with lawyers for the telecoms cautioning that the deal could fall apart if it does not close by then.
The takeover still requires approval from Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne. Mr. Champagne has said that he will wait for the legal process to play out before deciding whether to allow the transfer of Shaw’s wireless licences to Videotron.
