Apollo Remastered celebrates missions to space and moon in photos shot by NASA astronauts
Its author, Andy Saunders, is no dilettante. The 48-year-old is a science writer and an expert in digital restoration who, in 2019, produced the most clearly ever image of Neil Armstrong on the moon for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. More whimsically, he once analyzed pictures from Apollo 14 to determine that Alan Shepard’s golf shot travelled not the “miles and miles” the astronaut claimed, but only about 40 yards. It remains, however, a lunar distance record.
Saunders’ new book is a collection of some of the most famous photographs from the time, but also some lesser-known gems. More importantly, they’ve been meticulously cleaned and colour-corrected to provide sharp, detailed, lifelike images. Saunders even worked with surviving astronauts from the program, who confirmed the images’ veracity and also provided some nice blurbs for the book.
A brief but detailed postscript walks readers through the process of restoration, including “stacking,” in which multiple frames of 16mm motion picture film shot during the missions were combined to create a single crystal-clear image, including a fabulous panorama of the inside of a lunar module en route to the moon.
As awesome as the photos are, the captions are also worthy of attention, as they include not just details about the taking of the pictures, but fascinating facts about the missions. For instance, the oldest Earth rock ever found was not found on Earth, but on the surface of the moon, by the crew of Apollo 14. We also learn that the 500-mm telephoto lens carried on Apollo 15 was so heavy that the crew had to give up an equal weight in abort propellant in order to bring it along.
