Dusty Baker has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal to become the next manager of the astros.
Baker’s hiring was a sign the AL champions wanted to add a veteran presence to a franchise reeling from the dismissal of Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow. Baker has 22 years of managerial experience, starting in 1993 with the San Francisco Giants.
Baker will get a chance to chase his first title as a manager with a team that returns the bulk of its roster from last year that reached the World Series for the second time in three years before losing to the Nationals. Interesting twist to Dusty Baker's hiring by the Astros: Because Houston is the defending American League champion, Baker will manage the AL in this summer's All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium.Astros owner Jim Crane had indicated at the beginning of the search that he was looking for someone like Baker to bring stability to the team after the shakeup at the top.
If they retain pitching coach Brent Strom, the league’s oldest manager will have a fellow septuagenarian on his staff in the 71-year-old, who has worked for the Astros since 2014.
