During Sky News' Battle For No 10, Keir Starmer squirmed over question of supporting Jeremy Corbyn. He said 'I was certain that we would lose it. I did campaign for Labour'.
Sir Keir Starmer appeared anxious when asked about Jeremy Corbyn - while Rishi Sunak's words seemed 'scripted' during the Sky News election special last night, a body language expert has claimed.
She added: 'Overall Starmer was able to look more confident and the sitting position at the start in particular created an impression of a more elegant and weighty style of leadership than his nervous display during the head-to-head. Ms James added: 'His smile rate was almost constant while Starmer's smiles were rare and prompted by wounding attacks, like the 'robot' question.' She added that his body language when he was asked about former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was 'in direct contrast to this 'open, honest' performance'. The Labour leader was pressed about whether his party would consider hiking fuel duty or capital gains tax to raise more cash for the public purse, after he already ruled out raising income tax, national insurance, or VAT in the next parliament.She said: 'There are some regular red flags from Starmer's body language via non-verbal cues or clues that he dislikes being challenged or spoken over.
However, Ms James pointed out that his immediate response to one question was a 'tongue poke', which 'mimics a baby rejecting food and it implies a rejection of or dislike for being questioned'. 'His technique of dodging questions is a flaw in an age when audiences find it personally insulting, especially when the questions come from a genuine desire to gain information or clarity. This is not the era of Paxman with his killer questions.'
And Ms James analysed Sir Keir's statement that 'my father was a tool-maker', saying he was 'jeered by the audience, who have heard these words one time too many'. She continued: 'His erect thumb looks like a 'thumbs-up' ritual with his right hand, with the fingers below balled into a fist, suggesting a desire to appear resolute and that it will all be OK.
