Mitchell Lynn Bacom was convicted of murdering 14-year-old Suzanne Bombardier, nearly 42 years after the teenaged honor student was taken from her home, sexually assaulted, and stabbed to death.
MARTINEZ — After nearly 42 years, hundreds of house of police work, and the arrest of a suspect linked via a new method of DNA matching, the book is closed on one of Antioch’s most notorious murders.On Tuesday afternoon, after a half-day of deliberations, a Contra Costa jury convicted Mitchell Lynn Bacom of murdering 14-year-old Suzanne Bombardier. Bacom, 67, now faces a sentence of life without the possibility of parole, which he’ll likely receive later this year.
Suzanne was an honor student, who brought her sewing kit with her the night of June 21, 1980, to make outfits for her nieces’ Barbie dolls. Her disappearance wasn’t discovered until the following morning, when her sister made breakfast and called for Suzanne to come to the table. The case kicked off a massive investigation that included the FBI and multiple local law enforcement agencies. Police turned over hundreds of possible suspects and persons of interest, including notorious serial killers like Henry Lee Lucas, but no arrests were made until 2017.
Bacom, an Antioch resident, was living in far east Contra Costa and working as a mechanic when Suzanne was killed. He briefly dated Suzanne’s sister; police theorize he came to her sister’s apartment looking for her on the morning of the murder.
