The Antigonish Bulldogs successfully defended their Atlantic Canada junior B hockey title Sunday afternoon after edging the Kensington Vipers 3-2 in the final of the Don Johnson Memorial Cup at the Mount Pearl Glacier in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Trailing 2-1 after two periods, Venel Campbell and Ethan Twolan each scored in the final frame to lift the Bulldogs to victory. Twolan’s goal at 11:43 stood as the winner.The Bulldogs defeated the Kensington Vipers 3-2 in the championship game today in Mount Pearl to win the 2024 Don Johnson Memorial Cup.Max Chisholm and Chandler Desroches replied for the Vipers, the P.E.I. champions. The Bulldogs beat Kensington 4-3 in the gold-medal game of the 2023 tournament in Liverpool.
In Saturday’s semifinals, Antigonish blanked the Newfoundland champion St. John’s Caps 9-0 while Kensington clipped the host Mount Pearl Blades 6-2. In a meaningless round-robin finale on Friday, Campbell scored the winning goal at 3:53 of overtime as the Bulldogs edged the Vipers 4-3 to finish round-robin play at 3-0-1.
