Anthony Gismondi offers up five of his favourites from the B.C. Lieutenant\u002DGovernor\u0027s Wine Awards

Winemaker Liam Berti makes a statement with his intense Backyard Vineyards 2020 Syrah Reserve that comes off three sites in the south Okanagan. It joins the Lake Breeze Vineyards 2020 Syrah at the platinum level. Both wines are expected to be released later this year, so check the winery website for updated pricing and final release dates.

Fans of big reds have the Kismet Estate 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon and Fort Berens 2020 Cabernet Franc Reserve to look forward to. Both are hefty reds that will improve in bottle over the next five to seven years. Winemaker Kathy Malone’s white winemaking is always about fragrance and elegance, and in 2021 the Viognier represents. A long, warm, growing season yielded fully ripe fruit managed perfectly to preserve all the delicate aromatics. The nose is an explosion of spring blossoms and rose petals that spill onto a silky, spicy honeysuckle palate. Pretty is the best description, and it is ready to drink. The sweet fruit ripeness takes me to spicy food as the perfect match.
