The new reservation system is a response to the impact of tourism.
“Residents across the islands articulated a need for managing overcrowded natural spaces and other places with capacity issues to balance sharing the wonders of our home with access for kama aina and preservation of fragile ecosystems,” T. Ilihia Gionson, a spokesperson for the Hawaii Tourism Authority, told SFGATE in a statement.
The Maui state park is known for its lush greenery. It is also home to the Iao Needle, a 1,200-foot natural lava rock formation with historical and spiritual significance to Native Hawaiians.
