Forecasters reveal how many hurricanes and tropical storms they expect during the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season.
The bottom line: They think we are facing another extreme hurricane season, with as many as 16 to 20 named storms developing and six to eight of those becoming hurricanes. Of those hurricanes, the forecasters believe three to five will strengthen into major hurricanes — with top sustained winds of 111 mph or higher.
Based on averages during the past 30 years, the “normal” Atlantic hurricane season produces 14 named storms and seven hurricanes, three of which turn into major hurricanes that cause the most destruction. Forecasters from AccuWeather believe the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season will be very active for the third straight year. This is their early outlook, issued on March 30.If this does turn out to be a bad hurricane season, it would be the third straight year of above-normal hurricane activity., with 30 named storms in the Atlantic hurricane basin, and the 2021 season was the third most active season, with 21 named storms.
