Blue Jays 4 Reds 5 So that was brutal. We seem to be facing one of the best starting pitchers in baseball every game lately. Today it was Hunter Greene and he was terrific. 6.1 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned, 1 walk with 7 strikeouts.
We had chances against him. George Springer singled to start the game, and stole second. But Addison Barget lined one straight to second for a double play. Bo Bichette started the second off with a double and ended the second inning on second base. We finally scored in the seventh. Bo doubled again. Daulton Varsho walked. Then Alejandro Kirk singled Bo home. Chris Bassitt was also great. He gave up a couple of runs in the second, but that was it. Bassitt went 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 earned, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Yariel Rodríguez pitched two shutout innings of relief. The Red were winning until the top of the ninth. Vladimir Guerrero singled to start the game. Myles Straw took over as a pinch runner, not that he was needed because Bo homered to right center to give the lead. Varsho followed with another homer, giving us a two-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth. All should have been good. Tommy Nance came into pitch with Jeff Hoffman and Seranthony Domínguez unavailable. Nance gave up a single, got a pop-out, and then another single, putting the tying run on base. John decided to bring in Brendon Little. I’m not sure that Little wouldn’t have been my last choice, but then Little pitched well yesterday; he just didn’t field well. Little went to two balls before giving up a double that appeared to bring home both runners. The Jays appealed that the ball had left the field of play, and the umpires agreed, so the tying run was put back on third base, with the go-ahead run on second. The next batter singled through the drawn-in infield, scoring the tying and winning run. I’m not a big fan of having the infield in with the go-ahead run on second, but I’d imagine that with the lack of arms in the pen, the Jays didn’t want the game to go another inning. A tough way to lose a game. Jays of the Day: Bo , Rodriguez , and Varsho . Other Award: Little , Barger , Clement , Lukes , Gimenez , and Nance . Tomorrow we have Jose Berrios vs. Nick Lodolo .
