ICYMI: The decision was made to give the musical long-term sustainability and to further the centre’s mandate of creating new Canadian content, said Confederation Centre of the Arts CEO Steve Bellamy.

Steve Bellamy, left, chief executive officer of the Confederation Centre of the Arts, said on Nov. 24 that Anne of Green Gables – The Musical will now be shown at the Sobey Family Theatre every two years. Adam Brazier, artistic director of the Charlottetown Festival, said part of the decision is to allow to tell other stories. - Dave StewartCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The curtain will not rise on the centrepiece of the Charlottetown Festival in 2023.

The decision will also allow schools and non-professional community groups in the Maritimes to put on productions of the musical for the first time. Productions will be permitted in years when it’s not on stage at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. The 2024 return of Anne of Green Gables – The Musical coincides with the 150th birthday of Lucy Maud Montgomery, who authored the series of Anne books.

Brazier said ticket sales were strong in 2022 and added the centre sold four times more tickets to Islanders than ever before. Corryn Clemence, chief executive officer of the Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I. , said there is no arguing the musical has been a staple in the Island’s calendar every summer.
