Destruction of landmarks, homes and businesses is all but inevitable when it comes to war. Pictured are the ruins of a pavilion, circa 1945, in Luxembourg.As I went back over my column to edit and pull it together this week, an old memory from Echternach in Luxembourg floated to the top.
Those images took me back to my first view of the aftermath of war. I know there are many people my age who have images like that sitting in a special filing drawer in their memory bank. The file name is “War” and it gets added to as films and pictures and stories of what I learn about what humans have done to each other over the centuries.
Ukraine is slightly smaller than Saskatchewan in area and 11 times larger than Nova Scotia. It is the second largest country in Europe after Russia.The land mass of Ukraine has “belonged” to many over the centuries. It was one of the republics in the USSR not too long ago. The Tatars had a go at that piece of land, as did the Mongols. And then there was the Ottoman Empire. The Greeks held part of it way back then too. It’s a dizzying history.
