The Weeb Stop Event and After Party is just the latest example of the city's obsession with Japanese pop culture.

Richers Bun, who runs Weeb Stop along with Ed Valles and Kim Nguyen, says he stumbled into “itasha” culture — cars decorated with images from anime, manga or video games — at a car show.

Outside in the parking lot, however, told a slightly different story. Yoshida had hired anime vendors from around the region and elsewhere, including a mobile anime merchandise van. Cosplayers were out there to mingle with anime fans who posed for more pictures. “We expected 3,000 to show. No, we were wrong. It was a six-hour wait for over 10,000 people,” Yoshida says.

Apart from events such as the Tokyo Night Festival, and the Maid Cafe, there are no less than a half dozen more anime-themed happenings taking place in the Houston area. There's the Kimi Kawaii convention, followed by the anime and cosplay extravaganzas Comicpalooza and Anime Matsuri in July.
