Our attention will be turned to the sky for the solar eclipse, but some will be keeping their eyes on animals and their reactions to the celestial event.
Many agriculture, wildlife, and behavioral researchers will be using the time to study how pets, livestock, and wild animals react while also calling on citizens to report any interesting observations.is Jacob Dykes , Ph.D, with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
Dykes said there have been past reports of giraffes suddenly running in their pen, gorillas becoming more aggressive, and other anxious behaviors from animals since they don't know in advance what is about to happen and interpret the change in light, wind, and temperature as nightfall. For birds, they would suddenly go to nest and then a few minutes later, when the sun came back out, they would seem to start their day all over again,” Dykes told AgriLife Today. “There’s no telling what’s running through these critters’ minds when, suddenly midday, the sky goes dark.
Dykes said he and others will be searching social media platforms and others like iNaturalist for citizen reports and observations which are seen before, during, and after the eclipse, inviting citizens to report such observations.said dogs who get anxious during storms could associate the loss of light as adverse weather.
Overall, anxiety is likely the biggest concern for your pet, advising owners to leave their dogs at home or leashing them in case they are fearful. Like Dykes, she said data on animal behavior is thin, calling on citizens to share information with researchers like her.
