Renfroe, who leads major league outfielders in assists over the past three seasons, said he get as much of a thrill out of throwing out a runner as he does from hitting a home run.
TEMPE, Ariz. — Perhaps nobody on a baseball field is more aware of the outfielders’ arms than a third base coach, which is why Phil Nevin is so familiar with what Hunter Renfroe can do.
Although Renfroe has also hit at least 25 homers in each of his five full big league seasons, he said the thrill of throwing out a runner on the bases is right there with hitting a homer. Racking up big assist numbers is even more impressive considering that Renfroe’s reputation certainly prevents him from being tested as often as other outfielders. Also, teams are much more risk averse on the bases now than in years past, giving outfielders fewer chances.
He came up with the Padres, facing Nevin’s teams when he managed the Arizona Diamondbacks Triple-A affiliate. Nevin again saw him as the San Francisco Giants’ third base coach in 2017. Now, Renfroe says that his focus is mostly on accuracy. Every few days he works on making throws to the bases, simply trying to put the ball right on the base.
