An inside look at the unexpected friendship Andy Warhol struck up with Jean-Michel Basquiat
When Andy Warhol died unexpectedly in February 1987, it left a hole in New York City’s art scene. It also deeply affected his good friend, painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. Over the previous half decade, the two art stars collaborated on paintings, but also grew close on a personal level. Warhol became Basquiat’s landlord; they would have phone conversations and travel together; and the elder statesman of Pop art even visited his young friend’s family in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, for a meal.
Here, Hermann explains the connections between Warhol’s diaries and the Instagram age, and why the artist remains such a compelling figure decades after his death. It almost feels like you’re reading someone’s blog or Instagram feed. You’re getting an insight into who they are, what they do every day, from things like exercising to their trips across the world...But these moments were not documented to get likes and followers. They were documented just to capture these intimate moments, without real knowledge of how they might be used later.
