Like their counterparts across the country, Island educators and parents are working to achieve a balance when it comes to access to screen time in the classroom.
Rather, the organization is calling on the Department of Education and Early Learning to implement a policy to ensure the appropriate use of interactive technology during the school day. Back when old-timers like me went to school, a chalkboard was the interactive technology in that the teacher wrote on it. The cutting-edge technology was an eight-millimeter projector and usually a production from the National Film Board.
The home and School debate focused on the difference between active and passive screen usage. Active usage is essentially using technology for direct teaching in the classroom. While there definitely needs to be a balance, quite frankly it would be irresponsible not to teach students both how to use the current technology and ways to adapt as technology changes.
The Public Schools Branch indicated in an email to SaltWire that they are working with all the partners within the education system to help achieve that balance. Education and Early Years Minister National Jameson was questioned on the issue in the legislature and indicated the province currently follows something called the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guideline for Children and Youth when it comes to recommendations on screen time.
