Jason Lee, CEO of P.E.I. Senior’s Homes, says he still needs to see just what is in the two documents containing new voluntary standards for long-term care. - Logan MacLean/SaltWire Network fileLike other provincial governments across the country, P.E.I. must now decide how it will react to new voluntary standards released by Ottawa for the operation of long-term care homes.
That is all well and good but in order to result in change they must be implemented. Since health care is a provincial jurisdiction, it requires buy-in from the provinces and territories. As many of the facilities are privately run, the owners must also be onboard and provided with financial incentives to upgrade their properties. This is an effort that will be both costly and take considerable time to implement.
Here on P.E.I., the opposition Green Party is calling on the Dennis King government to begin the process of adopting the standards. Opposition Health Critic Michele Beaton maintains legislation should be introduced that allows operators time to implement the standards and provides penalties in the event that doesn't happen. She said having the standards put into law offers government the means to follow through.
