Staff shortages in the P.E.I. health care system are now, unfortunately, largely in the realm of the routine. Many Islanders, especially those in rural areas, no longer have confidence primary health care will be available when they need it. If it is, chances are they will have to drive some distance and wait a long time to receive it.There was also an announcement the same day that the Prince County Hospital would be without any anesthesiologists from April 5 to 11.
I don't want to be cynical but, as the old saying goes, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, the chances are pretty good it is probably a duck. With the retirement of long-time Liberal MLA Sonny Gallant, Evangeline - Miscouche was one of the seats the Progressive Conservatives hoped to pick up. They had what they felt was a star candidate in Gilles Arsenault, a former president of the P.E.I. Teachers Federation.
What should also be apparent is the need for a revision of the rules governing what can be announced during an election period. It is hard to imagine any reason, other than a perceived political gain, why the fact a vital service was disappearing for months would be kept from Islanders.
