Some solid reporting over the last several weeks has once again shone a spotlight on the glaring flaws surrounding the hiring and retention of health-care workers in the province. in 2023 on speeding up the hiring process within the health system was strikingly similar to recommendations made by members of the Health P.E.I. board two years earlier. A lack of action on the part of government led to the resignation of several board members, including former chair Derek Key.

The province's immediate answer is to hire another consultant to review the Willis system. A Department of Finance representative told Neatby the new study will provide recommendations"including modification to the Willis tool versus implementation of a new classification evaluation tool, including actions to streamline and automate the existing classification system where the recommendation is to continue utilizing the Willis tool.

That is the kind of aggressive recruiting that must happen if we want to attract health-care professionals in a competitive marketplace. Keep in mind many of the UPEI nursing grads are Islanders and even those who aren't made a conscious choice to study here. They all would be predisposed to consider working in P.E.I. in a favourable light.
