Now Heaney.A year ago, Heaney went to the Los Angeles Dodgers intent on “retooling and reimagining my stuff,” with a club known as a pitching-forward organization. But when he came back and pitched, he was, well, dynamite. The fastball, at a career-best 93 mph, compared to Dodger teammate Julio Urias. The slider, which he found at the tail end of the shortened spring training, spun at 2,583 RPMs, just a tick above the breaking ball of his fellow teammate, Clayton Kershaw. He piled up 110 strikeouts in 72 innings on the way to a 3.10 ERA. Among pitchers with at least 10 starts, only his new teammate, deGrom had a higher strikeout rate.
Tops among those things: a changeup. In 2022, he was essentially a two-pitch pitcher. He threw offspeed pitched only 5.1% of the time, a career low. So, while he piled up strikeouts early, his outings weren’t terribly long. The third trip through the order was a challenge. When batters did make contact, balls were hard hit. Average exit velocity: 91.2 mph. It ranked in the second-worst percentile in the league.
